The double progression model is a method of strength training that helps you make consistent progress, especially when increasing weight is challenging. This approach is particularly useful for exercises where weight increments are large, such as with dumbbells. Below is an explanation of how it works and its potential benefits.
Single vs. Double Progression: Understanding the Difference
For some exercises, a single weight progression model works well. In this approach, you keep the number of reps the same and only increase the weight. On barbell exercises, where you can increase the weight by small increments (such as five pounds at a time), it may be easier to add weight than to add more reps. However, with dumbbells—where weight increments are often much larger—increasing the weight without adjusting reps can be too challenging. This is where the double progression model becomes useful.
Understanding different progression strategies helps you select the approach that best matches your equipment, experience level, and training goals.
How to Implement Double Progression Effectively
With the double progression model, you work within a rep range instead of aiming for a specific rep number. For example, rather than performing exactly 5 reps each time, you might use a range of 4–6 reps. When you reach the top of your chosen rep range with a given weight, you increase the weight and start again at the lower end of the rep range.

The larger the percentage increase between weight increments, the wider your rep range should be. For instance, if you need to progress from a 5 lb dumbbell to a 10 lb dumbbell, you'll require a much higher rep range (such as 4–12), since 10 lbs is twice as heavy as 5 lbs. Generally, this is something you will need to feel out with your own body over time. Some lifters are much more efficient at hitting higher rep counts, and some are more efficient at hitting lower rep counts.
Adjusting Double Progression for Different Training Styles
When using a very sharp technique, there will be some degree of built-in tension to the exercise even when performed without weight. Thus, compared to traditional lifting (you may see rep conversion based on % of 1RM online, for example), you will notice less of a performance drop when moving to higher rep ranges. This makes the double progression model especially effective when using tension-based training techniques that emphasize quality of muscle engagement over external load.
By implementing double progression strategically and listening to your body's response, you'll maintain consistent progress without the frustration of impossible weight jumps or the stagnation that comes from never adjusting your training variables. This flexible approach to progressive overload supports long-term strength development while respecting your body's individual capacity and recovery needs.
