    The core refers to a group of muscles in your midsection—including the abdominals, obliques, lower back, and pelvic floor—that are crucial for stabilizing the spine and pelvis. These muscles have different, and sometimes opposite, functions. As a result, the phrase "engage the core" is often too vague, since it could mean activating different muscles for different tasks. Importantly, the core is worked hardest when it resists unwanted movement (anti-movement), rather than by creating movement. For example, stabilizing during a hinge to resist rounding of the back, or maintaining a flat back during a leg raise, both rely on the core's ability to prevent motion.


    The Rectus Abdominis: Your Primary Anti-Extension Muscle


    The rectus abdominis, commonly known as the "six-pack," primarily functions as an anti-extension muscle, meaning it resists the arching of the lower back. For example, during a strict leg raise, the abs contract to protect the spine by preventing the back from arching. While the rectus abdominis can generate a significant amount of movement—unlike some other core muscles—its primary function during most exercises is to resist extension and stabilize the trunk.


    Think of it like folding a piece of paper in small increments: even as the abs move, most of their effort goes toward resisting excessive arching or extension of the spine. Understanding proper core engagement techniques helps you train these muscles effectively for both strength and injury prevention.


    Obliques: Masters of Anti-Rotation and Anti-Lateral Flexion


    The internal and external obliques, located on the sides of the abdomen, play key roles in preventing lateral flexion (side bending) and rotation of the torso. For anti-lateral flexion, consider a one-arm shoulder press: when lifting a weight on one side, the obliques contract to keep your spine straight and prevent you from leaning. In anti-rotation moves, like a one-arm high row, the obliques stabilize your trunk to resist twisting as you pull a weight across your body.



    By engaging the obliques in these ways, you build both core strength and shoulder stability. This functional approach to core training and stability develops the strength patterns you need for both athletic performance and everyday activities.


    Spinal Erectors: Protecting Your Spine Through Anti-Flexion


    The spinal erectors, or paraspinals, protect and stabilize the spine by preventing flexion—resisting the rounding of the back and maintaining its natural curve. For example, during a hip hinge or Romanian deadlift, your hips move backward and place a force on the spine that would cause it to round forward if the spinal erectors weren't actively engaged to maintain proper spinal position.

    These muscles work in opposition to the abdominals and are essential for maintaining neutral spine alignment during lifting movements. By training both the anterior and posterior core muscles through proper movement patterns, you develop balanced core strength that protects your spine and enhances performance across all exercises.
