Why Burpees Aren't Worth the Hype

Burpees are the worst exercise humanity has ever invented. Under no circumstances should you perform them. If your trainer recommends you perform them, fire them and report them to the police. I am kidding, but burpees are a fantastic representation of an exercise that feels very hard, yet lacks effectiveness. Burpees aren't well-suited for training any fitness quality efficiently. They lack the full range of intense contractions to build muscle or strength.

Why Burpees Fail at Every Fitness Goal

The way they are performed with many reps, going into a plank position first, impedes the ability to build significant jumping power. And finally, due to the inefficiency with which the body's muscles are utilized, it is extremely challenging to build aerobic fitness efficiently and optimize energy expenditure. Often, if an exercise feels bad, it is bad, and burpees are a perfect example of this.

This illustrates an important principle in smart exercise selection: difficulty and discomfort don't automatically translate to effectiveness. The best exercises create targeted stimulus with minimal unnecessary stress.

Better Alternatives to Burpees for Real Results

Prioritizing planks, push-ups, or squats separately offers a less stressful, safer, and more effective workout. In training, it is essential to recognize that stressing your body out or doing something difficult is not the goal of training; rather, it is stimulating the adaptations you need to improve. Always have a reason for performing an exercise; think about how it works towards your goal or improves your body.

By choosing exercises that match your specific goals whether that's building strength, improving cardiovascular fitness, or developing power—you'll make faster progress with less risk of injury and burnout.

Smart Exercise Selection for Sustainable Progress

In summary, choosing exercises that align with your specific fitness goals and promote safe, effective progress is far more beneficial than simply opting for what feels the most challenging. Make informed decisions with your training to achieve the results you want without unnecessary pain and stress.

Understanding evidence-based training principles helps you distinguish between exercises that look impressive but deliver poor results (like burpees) and those that may seem simple but create powerful adaptations. Focus on quality movements that serve your goals rather than chasing suffering for its own sake.
